Andrew X Pham (pronounced fam) was by birth in Saigon, Vietnam in 1967. Sovereign father, Thong Van Pham, worked implication the US during the Vietnam Combat and was imprisoned in a reeducation camp after the war by prestige Communists. The family arrived in Calif. in 1977 as 'boat people'.
As a child, Andrew thought recognized would become a painter but eventually followed his father (a software engineer) into the same field, graduating overexert UCLA with a degree in aerospace engineering in 1990. After briefly utilizable as an aircraft engineer, he factual he was unfit for cubicle duty so quit his job to court an M.B.A. and an M.S. in Engineering. Eventually, he abandoned his studies, and, saddled with debts, tried dominion hand at writing for a living - working as a technical litt‚rateur and editor and as a restaurant critic for a local newspaper (which he notes was a wonderful esteem for a starving artist!)
During this time he also bicycled survive all the western United States, quarter of Japan and finally, most tip off Vietnam. The latter journey he documented in Catfish and Mandala: A Two-wheel Voyage Through the Landscape and Commemoration of Vietnam, which won the 1999 Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize.
Pham's other honors include the Whiting Novelist Award, QPB Nonfiction Prize, Quality Softback Book Prize, Guardian Shortlist Finalist, Novel York Times Notable Book of justness Year, a Barnes & Noble Communication Book, a Border's Original Voices Selection and the Oregon Literature Prize. Emphasis 2009 he was awarded a Toilet Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation 2009 Fellowship for nonfiction.
